The 4 C's

The 4 C's are the criteria for determining the value of a diamond and global standard. They are also used to evaluate lab grown diamonds.

Cut
The cut of a diamond is crucial to its beauty and sparkle. It refers to how light interacts with the diamond. More than anything else the way a diamond is cut determines how big, bright and vibrant it appears under different lighting conditions. The cut is determined by the criteria of symmetry, polish and fire. Only the brilliant is analyzed more closely in terms of cut and is subject to an additional criterion: proportions. The best cut of a diamond is called excellent, followed by excellent to very good +, very good, good, mediocre and poor.

We use Lab Grown diamonds that are cut excellent or excellent to very good +.

Color
The color rates the natural color of white diamonds on a color scale of D-Z. The more colorless the diamond, the more valuable the diamond. The color is important because it directly affects the appearance of the diamond. Diamonds with a poor color grading can appear slightly yellowish.

color scale
D - F The diamonds are colorless.
G - J The diamonds are almost colorless.
K - M The diamonds are slightly tinted.
N - R The diamonds are very slightly yellowish.
S - Z The diamonds are slightly yellowish.

We use Lab Grown diamonds in colors D-F.

Clarity

The clarity of a diamond refers to its internal characteristics and has a direct impact on the sparkle of the diamond. These inclusions are formed when small crystals become trapped within the diamond as the diamonds are subjected to extreme heat and pressure.

The clarity scale reflects the size, number and position of internal features when viewed with a 10x magnifying glass. The highest clarity of a diamond is called flawless. This means that when the diamond is viewed with a magnifying glass no inclusions can be found.

FLFlawless (no internal inclusions or external blemishes)
IFInternally flawless (no internal inclusions but minor external blemishes)

Carat (weight)

The weight of a diamond is given in carats. One carat corresponds to 0.2 grams. The abbreviation for carat is ct and is usually given to 2 decimal places.

The value and quality of a diamond is reflected in all 4 C's and not just in the weight. Therefore it is important to include all 4 C's when evaluating a diamond.
